  1. The Golden Temple

One of the most sacred place in the World for Sikhs and also one of the most famous Temples of India. Golden Temple also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib is a temple covered with pure gold. The Golden Temple is situated in between a beautiful lake and surrounded by various temples. The must visit place here is the daily Langar (community kitchen) where it serves free vegetarian food daily for upto 1,00,000 people. If you wish, you too can volunteer at the Golden Temple kitchen. The Golden Temple is very inspirational and beautiful place to visit.


2. Partition Museum

Just near the Golden Temple is Partition Museum, the first museum in the World devoted to partition. It includes the memoirs, collections, pictures of the people who had witnessed the partition during the year 1947 when Indian gained its independence.


3. Amritsar streets / markets

Just near the Golden Temple, you can visit the colourful shops and streets of Amritsar. You can explore a wide variety of traditional clothes, arts, famous foods such as Amritsari kulcha and lassi and much more here.


4. Jallianwala Bagh

Just near Golden Temple is Jallianwala Bagh, a garden of historical importance which is preserved in the memory of the people wounded and killed in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre during the festival of Baisakhi on 13th April 1919.

General Dyer ordered the troops to fire their rifles in which almost 1,500 people were injured or killed. There are various structures present here which reveals the atrocities that occurred here. Which includes a well where thousands of people jumped to save their lives, walls which still include the marks of the bullets fired.


5. Attari - Wagah Border

Just near Amritsar is the Attari- Wagah (India- Pakistan) border. The border ceremony or the beating retreat ceremony is held everyday before the sunset. The military of both the countries i.e. India & Pakistan meet at the border post and it includes the closing of International gates and lowering the flags of both the countries. Here you will feel a different type of energy where the people of both the countries cheer for their countries. It's amazing when all the crowd engages together in singing patriotic songs, chanting Indian National Anthem and performing various dances and much more.

 

Extra Tips:

  1. Two days are sufficient to explore Amritsar.

  2. Attari Border is 25-30 kms away from the city, rest all the places can be visited simultaneously.

  3. Jammu can also be visited along with Amritsar.
